Princeton University Engineering Quadrangle; Professor Davidson Laboratory Renovation

This lab renovation required all new mechanical, electrical, life safety, and lab gas system designs to the third floor in the Princeton Engineering Quadrangle A wing building at Princeton University. The new lab space is used by Dr. Davidson and team, as a main research lab and supplemental special equipment rooms within the floor. The group will focus on developing, studying, and fabricating polymeric materials. The lab layouts and supporting building infrastructure included bench space for storing individual materials in progress, balances for weighing out materials, storage for chemicals, flammable solvents, and reagents, and hoods for running reactions and holding equipment for evaporation and separation such as a rotary evaporator.

 

CORA Services Early Years Childhood Center

CORA Services Early Years Childhood Center was a commercial tenant pre-school fit-out project located within the Huntingdon Mills historic renovation, East Huntingdon Street, in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The facility is heated and cooled with a variable refrigerant flow all electric heat pump system for energy efficiency and flexibility in the installation to fit within the historic fabric of the building. The building was provided with a 100% outdoor air rooftop unit with exhaust air system and energy recovery to provide ventilation air to both the day care facility and the remaining commercial spaces, providing exceptional indoor air quality. New electrical distribution, lighting design, and life safety systems were provided to support the new space usage across multiple floors of the building.

 

Gettysburg Montessori Charter School Classroom Addition and Renovation

The Gettysburg Montessori Charter School is a free K-6 public/charter school open to all students in Pennsylvania. The project involved a one story, 15,200 square foot addition to the existing school building to double the number of classrooms, as well as the creation of a new library, and new art room. The auditorium and stage area were also renovated, along with other minor renovations within the existing school building. A dedicated outside air and exhaust rooftop system with energy recovery was specified for the addition and areas of the existing school. Variable refrigerant flow all electric heating and cooling systems were utilized for additional energy savings. The project received an AIA Pennsylvania merit award in 2022.

 

Hutchins Art Gallery Renovation

J +M Engineering provided the design and construction administration for the upgrades to the mechanical systems serving the Hutchins Gallery space in the existing Kirby Arts Center, Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ. The Kirby Arts Center is currently undergoing a renovation project designed by Gittings Associates Architects, and engineering work was needed for the last phase of construction: the renovation of the Hutchins Gallery and supplemental spaces. A new rooftop HVAC system was designed to heat and cool the gallery, lobby spaces, and supplemental spaces in the basement, first, and second floors. A new art storage and processing space was provided on the first floor, with a supplemental HVAC system for tighter temperature and humidity control. We explored options for steam heat versus electric heat in the new rooftop HVAC system, as an improvement over the current electric resistance heating system. All new steam humidifiers were provided to serve all spaces during the winter months.

 

The Dance Institute of Washington

J+M Engineering provided the MEP/FP permit design services for this partial second floor renovation project located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC. The engineering scope of work involved converting approximately 880 SF of existing office space into a fifth dance studio, as well as upgrading the existing lobby area, administration offices and study spaces to allow the Institute to expand providing its community development program goals.

 

Potomac Station Community Center

The MEP scope of work for this project involved upgrading an existing community pool facility including a new children’s splash park, all new pool pumping and filtration equipment, as well as the interior renovation of the lower level men’s and women’s changing rooms, lifeguard’s office and corridors. 

 

Children’s Village

Location: Philadelphia, pa

Children’s Village is a non-profit early childhood education and school-age academic enrichment facility located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The scope of work consisted of incorporating ground floor tenant space into a Children’s Village school facility remodeled to include new classrooms, office spaces, and bathrooms. Classroom and office space renovations to Children’s Village facilities on floors 1 thru 5 were also part of this scope of work which included upgrades to the life safety and HVAC systems, new kitchenettes, new bathrooms with children’s height fixtures, new high efficiency lighting and lighting controls throughout.

 

Global Leadership Academy Southwest

Global Leadership Academy Southwest (GLA-SW) is a grades K through 8 public charter school located in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood of West Philadelphia. J+M Engineering was pleased to provide the MEP Schematic Design Performance Specification to serve as the basis of design for upcoming engineering system upgrades to the existing kitchen, dining area, auditorium, gymnasium, as well as office and classroom spaces located on the 1st thru 3rd floors.       

 

Isaiah Zagar Studio, Watkins Street

Location: Philadelphia, PA

 Isaiah Zagar’s studio on Watkins Street in South Philadelphia serves many needs for the artist and the community. The space is used as a gallery, storage facility, production studio, event space, and catering area. The renovations to the mezzanine created a large kitchen and living space, as well as additional bathroom facilities. The space utilizes a radiant floor type heating system with high efficiency condensing boilers. A condensing water heater was also installed to minimize energy consumption. A heating system was added to the lower level gallery and studio to facilitate the wet sprinkler installation. Air conditioning was added throughout at a later stage.

 

Western Learning Center, Child Care Facility

Western Learning Center is an affordable cost, South Philadelphia child care and early childhood learning facility which focuses on preparing young children for success in school, at home and in life. J+M Engineering was pleased to provide the MEP permit design for the classroom and office renovations which included new multi-split ductless heat pump systems with an energy recovery ventilator serving all floors of the facility.

 

Iglesia La Luz Del Mundo Church

J+M Engineering was pleased to provide the MEP permit design for the approximately 8150 SF, Iglesia La Luz Del Mundo Church project located on West Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia. The project consisted of extensive renovations to an existing three story church complex with sanctuary space, full basement, meeting rooms and office space throughout.  

 

New Courtland Senior Services
LPN School Education Center – Germantown Campus

The New Courtland Network provides healthcare training, and affordable housing and nursing care for seniors in Philadelphia. This partial first floor renovation project included modifications to the entrance lobby, a new corridor, converting the existing computer lab into a physical therapy room, increasing the size of the existing reception/activity area, and the addition of a new food servery area and bathrooms.
